2) Oxford History of Art: Modern Architecture, by Colquhoun, Alan (2002). [electronic resource] (Chapter on Adolf Loos, pp. 73-86)

Loos’ idea was based around the progress of culture being associated with the deletion of ornament from everyday objects. I respect his view regarding craftsmen and builders wasting their time on ornamentation, when these objects would become obsolete, however I do not wholly agree that ornamentation is a crime. In my opinion different genres in the community of art can work together well to produce quality architecture, aesthetically pleasing and not simply constructed of purposeful elements.

I think that the Looshaus in Michaelerplatz, Vienna is a great example of how his theory works well in respect to structure being relevant to its function. It marks the rejection of historicism, as well as the ornaments used by Wiener Secession. I think the building works well with the lower floor decoration attracting the public realm in contrast to the stripped upper residential stories. I agree that architecture should be a natural and spontaneous language capturing the style of our time (through luggage, jewellery, clothes etc) and I like how the interior focuses on this belief.
